Meetingpoint brewery

Spalt 2012

The city brewery of the little Bavarian town “Spalt” is known as the last communal brewery in Germany. Holz and Design Wurm was engaged to plan and realize a homelike meeting point including a bar and presenting space in the so called “Picherei“ in between the producing scenery.

Experience the history: In the earlier “Picherei” beer barrels had been sealed. This historical background should have been transferred into the modern location. Therefore, historical machines were put into oak-framed cabinets with integrated lights and turned into high tables. Wall silhouettes and a suspension demonstrate the different workings steps in an old “Picherei”. The bar counter simulates the barrel handling procedure through metal tapes, visible screws and lined up boards. Following a traditional “Stammtisch” the architects decided to implement a modern high table with a massive wooden desk panel – like a beer barrel it is framed by a metal tape. Filigree high chairs with light metal pedestals and ocre artificial leather mix in some modern attributes.

Optical highlight: An abstract barrel tower serves as room divider. Its individual barrels can be decorated differently and so be used as creative presentation space or illuminated picture frames. Technical refinement was needed to construct it as dimensional stability as high room humidity had challenged the construction team. Besides, the cabinets should be opened easily. Observers should also recognize the motto clearly by seeing the wall silhouette. Blue wall paint supports the optical separation of the guest area from the production area.
